A&E's City Confidential comes to
Michiana
David Wallach, senior producer for City
Confidential
The cities of Elkhart and
Mottville, Michigan are getting their 15 minutes of fame. Both
places are the center of attention for a television program on the
cable channel A&E.
New faces with cameras For
the past two weeks now, residents in Elkhart and Mottville have
seen three guys with camera gear in tow, walking around city
streets. The TV crew is affiliated with cable station A&E and a
television program called City Confidential. David Wallach, senior
producer for City Confidential, says, "City Confidential is
about crimes that affect a community. This one was in Elkhart and
Michigan and is still going on today."
The focus is on a bizarre murder
in Mottville that took place in 1996. Carol Knepp was
killed in a drive-by murder. The show, now in its 8th season,
was drawn to the area because of the 'unbelieveability' of the
crime. Show producers say it is one of the most bizarre crimes they
have ever seen. "One murder of one lady spanned more random acts of
violence then I've seen. There was a shooting, bombs, pipe bombs,
house fires. Just from one murder that happened in 1996,"
said Wallach.
January air date The A&E
crew is busy getting the final shots and final interviews for the
piece that will air sometime in January. Producers say this crime
will get people's attention. "It's always the off-center crimes like
this one that makes people go, 'I never thought that would happen
here'." Producers say the show goes together like 'vodka and
peanut butter' because it starts out like a travel show, goes into
the crime then ends with how crime has affected community.
Stephanie
Tomasky – Producer, Writer, Director
Emmy
award winning producer Stephanie Tomasky got her start in television
working while still in college as an intern for NBC’s “Today Show”.
After graduating from the University of Massachusetts with a degree
in communications, she took a full time position with the “Today
Show”, working on several travel related projects and the opening of
the new “Today Show” studio at Rockefeller center in New York City.
Leaving NBC, she joined HBO, where she worked on the premier of “The
Chris Rock Show”, as well as the 1992 election coverage for
“Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher”. Marriage took her to
Chicago where she produced many hours of prime time television for
A&E’s Biography Series and The History Channel on subjects
ranging from Leonard Peltier and the Wounded Knee uprising, to
biographies of Robert Duvall, Graham Kerr, and Suzanne Sommers. An
opportunity to produce and direct the first season of “Starting
Over”, a revolutionary daytime reality series created by
Bunim/Murray, the originators of “The Real World”, allowed her to
use her considerable talents to produce television that truly
bettered the lives of the women on the show. For her production and
directing work on “Starting Over” she received an Emmy for producing
in a Special Class Series. A move to San Francisco brought her to
supervise a HGTV show at Edelman Productions where she is finally
able to combine her interest in style and design with her talent and
experience in producing quality television programming. In a short
time she and her husband Mitch (a trauma surgeon at San Francisco
General Hospital) have become enamored with the beauty, landscape,
style, food and vibe of San Francisco and the bay
area.
Randy Barry: Yugar Productions
Casting:
After being a cast member on MTV's Real
World, Randy got involved working behind the camera casting for such
MTV shows as TRL. Now he has brought the casting process to college
campuses across the country. "Experiencing the casting process first
hand offers students a rare opportunity to learn about themselves
and the shows that they love. This campus activity is different from
any other that has been offered. Students always pack these
events, and unlike studio castings I've done, every person is
involved one on one and gets to go through the process. I also
get a chance to speak to the students before the casting, so I'm
able to give them tips and answer questions. Because were casting
for so many different shows, people just have fun with it, they
think about themselves and what defines them as
individuals..."
